FNF Special Edition: Love Tap! - Rings & Sapphires

In honor of Hallmark's....er.... I mean, uh, everyone's favorite romantic holiday, Friday Night Fights presents a special Valentine Saturday Edition: Love Tap!

The main rule in this round is that every entry must include an image featuring two lovers, or former lovers, duking it out.

Since our honorable host Spacebooger forbade me from using a scan of Batman and Robin, I will use another famous DC couple in their place. Tonight, I give you:

HAL "GREEN LANTERN" JORDAN

VS.

CAROL "STAR SAPPHIRE" FERRIS

This lovers' quarrel comes to us courtesy of Action Comics Weekly#602, by Jim "Christopher Priest" Owsley and the late, great Gil Kane. The Star Sapphire has once again possessed Carol Ferris and made her, well, batshit crazy. Her first move is to kill Katma Tui. Here she confronts Hal:

I don't advocate using violence against women, but it didn't look like Hal had much of a choice here.

And on that sweet, romantic note:

Happy Valentine's Day!

Gosh, I hate this particular story. They killed off Katma, for NO real reason, and in her own kitchen without a fight. Then John goes bonkers, and Carol is so evil it just isn't funny.

I wonder if Carol and John have interacted since Rebirth, and what they would have to say to one another?

Yeah, this wasn't a stellar point in Green Lantern history.

I particularly hated the way Katma was killed. Not only didn't they show Katma putting up a fight when she was killed, they didn't even show KATMA, other than the panel where Carol first appears in the kitchen. And it was pretty much done for the sole purpose of raising Hal and John's angst levels. Textbook case of how NOT to treat a female supporting character.

And during that period John Stewart was, for want of a better word, a champion fuck-up. That was around the time when he wiped out the whole Xanshi system over in COSMIC ODYSSEY. A complete 180 from the cool customer he is today.

So why did I pick this scan?

1. Because, if taken apart from the context of the rest of the story, it's a nice Kane-illustrated fight scene which fit Spacebooger's criteria for this round, and

2. It was the first scan with a Hal-Carol fight I could find. I was torn about using it, but, in the grand tradition of Abin Sur, I picked it because it was closest.

For the sake of Spacebooger's challenge, if you want more images of Hal and Carol smacking each other around, look for Green Lantern Annual #1 (1992). Another low point in GL history, there's LOTS of domestic violence in THAT one!
