Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray - Round 4: Dick Cheney Edition!

Tonight's round of Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray comes from a 2013 series we lost way too soon, Fearless Defenders#6 by Cullen Bunn and Will Sliney. Valkyrie, Misty Knight, and Dani Moonstar have teamed up with some of Earth's mightiest heroines to fight to save the Earth from the Doom Maidens. The battle cost them the life of their companion, Dr. Annabelle Riggs. So Valkyrie, displaying some of the worst timing ever, decides to use this moment for a recruitment drive.

Misty Knight's reaction to this call to arms?

She goes Dick Cheney on Val.

Tonight's fight music comes from the master of telling people what to do with their jobs, Johnny Paycheck.

Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray - Round 3: Bad Santa!

Tonight's round of Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray is a special holiday edition. It comes to us from DC's 1970 comic Hot Wheels#6 (based on the 1969 Saturday morning cartoon show), written by Len Wein and illustrated by Neal Adams & Dick Giordano.

Synopsis: The Hot Wheels Racing Club have befriended a young boy whom they discover is Prince Timothy of the country of Kalvania. They also discover that someone is trying to kill him. And that someone is.....

Santa and his elves????

Taking advantage of the distracted Duke, the Hot Wheelers make their move.

And that's the end of that race!

Tonight's fight music is...what else?

Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray - Round Two: Out Of This World Wolverine Abuse!

Well, I won last week's opening round of Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray with one of my favorite things: Late 70's John Byrne art. So for tonight, I've decided to go to the late 70's Byrne well one more time with this interstellar embroglio from Uncanny X-Men#108, pencilled and co-plotted by Byrne and written by Chris Claremont. But this time, I'm also adding two more of my favorite things:

A.) Late 70's Terry Austin inks,

and

B.) Wolverine abuse.

Synopsis: The X-Men are on Shi'Ar and, along with the Starjammers, are trying to get access to the M'Kraan Crystal so they can accomplish the minor task of saving all existence. There's one problem, though:

The crystal has its own guardian.

Doesn't look like much, does he?

So of course Marvel's favorite cash cow, sporting an outfit he...liberated from Timber Wolf Fang when the X-Men fought the Legion Of Super-Heroes Shi'Ar Imperial Guard in the previous issue, is the first one to get cocky.

Oh, lighten up, Scott! What's the worst that could happen?

Oh, that.

Hh. Turns out Cyclops actually was right this time.

In honor of Mr. Overexposed getting knocked sky-high, tonight's classic is this high-altitude number by Jigsaw. (No, not the movie serial killer or the Punisher villain.)

Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray - Round One: In Which Spidey Goes The Full Fonzarelli!

Greetings! It's time for Friday Night Fights: Sugar Ray, the latest bout from our host, Spacebooger. (Although why he's naming a bout after a marginal 90's pop band is beyond me.) For our first round, I thought I'd demonstrate how topical references often made their way into our favorite superhero comics, even as far back as 1977. For example, this story from Marvel Team-Up#67, written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by John Byrne and Dave Hunt, features a linguistic tie-in to a popular Garry Marshall sitcom that was at peak popularity at the time this comic came out.

Synopsis: Spider-Man has just saved Tigra's life. Unfortunately, he got trampled by a herd of animals to do so. While Tigra is tending to him, the person whom Spidey saved Tigra from, namely Kraven The Hunter, has recovered and is about to take advantage of the two heroes' distraction.

Let's see how that works out for him, shall we?

Kraven, you're such a Potsie!

Tonight's fight music is from the TV series of the same era that also featured the full Fonzarelli.
