Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! Round 10: I Saw The (Doctor) Light!

Back in Round 5 of Friday Night Fights: G7, I fulfilled my promise to Spacebooger that I would post at least one Hal Jordan head injury entry. But Hal head injury posts are like potato chips: Who can stop at just one?

Time to crank up our fight music, which comes to us this week from Todd Rundgren:

"Then you gazed up at me

And the answer was plain to see

'Cause I saw the light...in your eyes."

Doctor Light, that is. Back in the good old days. Before Marv Wolfman and John Ostrander turned him into comedy relief (albeit entertaining), and before Brad Meltzer...well, don't get me started on that whole fiasco. When he was a bit of a corny Snidely Whiplash villain, but still quite dangerous, with an interesting and formidable power-set which, in all honesty, made him kind of a badass. Without having to rape anyone.

This high-light comes from Green Lantern#33, "Wizard of the Light-Wave Weapons" by Gardner Fox, Gil Kane & Sid Greene.

Spacebooger says: "Lights out!"

Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! - Round 9: Bulls On Parade!

Howdy, Pardners! I'm goin' into Round 9 of Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! with guns blazing! The guns of Jonah Hex, that is.

Tonight, we spotlight a tale from Jonah Hex#32 titled "Gunfight At Murphysburg!", written by Michael Fleisher and illustrated by the awesome Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, who proved here that he could draw more than just Superman well. Our fight music for tonight is "Bulls On Parade" by Rage Against The Machine, for reasons which will become clear later.

Synopsis: Jonah rides into Murphysburg looking to deliver some payback to Arbee Stoneham, a veteran bounty hunter who handed Jonah a humiliating defeat on his first foray into bounty hunting. Jason Crowley and his gang, whom Jonah had been pursuing earlier, happen to be in Murphysburg at the same time and learn of Jonah's plans. Crowley decides this is the perfect opportunity for the gang of eleven men to ambush Jonah at the stockyards, since he has to pass through there to get to Stoneham.

Let's see how that works out for them, shall we?

As you can see, Jonah had already found out about their plans, thanks to an old drunk who had been sleeping off a bender at the same time and place where Crowley's men were setting up their attack.

Four down.....

Seven down!

But lest you think Jonah will have it too easy......

But that doesn't mean Jonah's down and out, as these roughnecks will learn...

Nine down!

Ok, that's eleven down. Jonah's home free... Oh, wait! I said it was the eleven-man gang and Jason Crowley! So....

Right now, I bet you're wondering why I picked the song "Bulls On Parade".

That's why.

"Bulls on Parade!!!!"

Spacebooger knows that when you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! - Round 8: Kate!

For Round 8 of Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! , I'm resurrecting a scan that was my first attempt ever at a Friday Night Fights post. But, lest you think I'm merely recycling old rounds, notice that I use the word "attempt". That's right, due to an e-mailing snafu on my part, this entry never made it into the ring. So I get to use it on a technicality.

But why, you ask, am I even using it? Have I finally run out of new ideas?

Bite your tongue! I'm using this scan because, quite frankly, there was no way in hell I was going 12 rounds in a competition dedicated to fight music without playing at least one selection from Ben Folds Five. For tonight's round, I'm using "Kate" from their album Whatever And Ever, Amen. And I can think of no better scan to go with it.*

Everybody sing along:

I wanna be.....Kate!!!

Kate!!!

Kate!!!

The facekick above comes from Birds of Prey#102, by Gail Simone, Nicola Scott, and Doug Hazelwood, and is being administered by Manhunter a.k.a. Kate Spencer.

*(Well, actually, there was the scan where she killed off all those Multiplex duplicates, but that had been used in a round before. Also, that new Batwoman story was too recent. Mmmm, J.H. Williams art! Yum!!!)

Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! - Round 7: Mind Games!

To celebrate my victory in Round 6 of Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music, I'm changing things up in Round 7 with a fight that's a little more....cerebral.

Let's start with a question: Who do you think is the most powerful member of the Legion of Superheroes?

Superboy? Mon-El? Wildfire?

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. It's Imra Ardeen, aka Saturn Girl, as my entry in Round 7 will demonstrate.

This scan comes from Legion of Super-Heroes#35, written by Paul Levitz and illustrated by Greg LaRocque (of super-speed pimpslap fame) and Mike DeCarlo. Universo has taken over virtually everything, and all the Legionnaires have either been taken out (Brainiac 5, Dream Girl, Chameleon Boy) or are under Universo's control. All except Saturn Girl.

And here she is confronting Universo for all the marbles:

Oh, snap!

But wait! There's more!

You mean a duel against the combined might of Mon-El and Ultra Boy... was only the preliminary?

That's right. Wait until you see the main event. Time for tonight's fight music, "Mind Games" by John Lennon:

We're playing those mind games together

Pushing barriers, planting seeds.....

Yeah, whose conqueror are you NOW, beyotch?

Not this guy's.

Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music! - Round 6: Man In The Mirror

Last week I submitted my Friday Night Fights: G7 - Fight Music Round 5 entry on Tuesday, 2 days prior to the news of Michael Jackson's death. So, for Round 6, I'm paying tribute to the late Mr. Jackson's music by using one of his songs as this week's fight track.

Tonight's melee is brought to you courtesy of Animal Man#8, by Grant Morrison, Chas Truog, and Doug Hazelwood. Mirror Master has been hired to kill Buddy Baker (a.k.a. Animal Man), and has chosen to attack Baker in his own home to accomplish that goal. Buddy's wife, Ellen, ain't havin' it.

The Jackson tune I'm using for tonight's fight is --- what else? --- "Man In The Mirror".

I'm starting with the man in the mirror,

I'm asking him to change his ways.....

And no message could have been any clearer......

That message?

"Don't fuck with Ellen Baker."
